Welcome to the latest issue of the SAIW Fusion eNewsletter that highlights the work we do, championing the skill of welding as a key enabler of the South African economy. Each quarter we round up some of the key content we’ve produced to keep you informed and even entertained and this month is no different! Over the last two years, the SAIW has created a very successful online campaign around the #storiesofsuccess that has profiled various past and present students who have achieved incredible career success and personal fulfilment due in large part to their training at the SAIW. To build on this momentum and develop the forms of content used to communicate these stories, we’ve recently launched the first in a series of video interviews with students, lecturers and in-house experts. ISO 3834 THE ANSWER FOR MINING SUPPLIERS SEEKING
WORLD CLASS RECOGNITION & REVENUE
 
 
In a development that looks set to become a long-term requirement, there is a move in the South African mining industry to specify that welding fabricators and associated suppliers must obtain ISO3834 welding certification to ensure the quality and safety of the products and services that they supply. This is a welcome and overdue development given that suppliers to a variety of other safety-critical sectors – including the power, petrochemical and rail industries – have all moved to mandatory ISO 3834 requirements for companies seeking to obtain contracts with them.

SAIW TRAINING MOULDS A PASSION FOR WELDING
 
 
Nick Ashley is a current thriving student at the SAIW who has shown that the SAIW International Institute of Welding (IIW) globally recognised qualification can add value to existing welding skills even amid a very successful welding career. Ashley was born and raised in Kwazulu-Natal and spent most of his primary school days in Queensburgh near Durban. After completing his schooling, he had a strong interest in metalwork and welding, which led him to search for a job in the industry. He was subsequently able to secure a job at Maxe Bullbars, where he started working in the polishing bay, learning how to treat, prep, and polish stainless steel.

SAIW INSTRUMENTAL IN DRIVING WELDING EXPERTISE
ACROSS THE CONTINENT
 
 
SAIW’s Executive Director John Tarboton recently attended the inaugural TWF Africa (of which the SAIW is a founding member) Annual Assembly and Conference in Cairo where he said that the conference marked a significant milestone in the journey towards promoting and advancing the art and science of welding in Africa and beyond. He added; “The theme for this conference, ‘Welding and Allied Processes – Blueprint Africa,’ could not be timelier. The African continent is rapidly developing, and the role of welding in this development cannot be overemphasised.”

SAIW OFFERS NEW FAST TRACK INTERNATIONAL
WELDER QUALIFICATION FOR EXPERIENCED WELDERS 
 
 
The SAIW is proud to announce the launch of an exciting streamlined international welder qualification via the new fast tracked IIW Standard Diploma for experienced welders designed to lower the barriers to entry and boost the number of global international welders in the world. SAIW CEO Herman Potgieter says; “There is no doubt that there is a definite need for this type of international qualification which creates a global benchmark of welding skill allowing for standardisation and the enhancement of skills.
