REAL ECONOMY SKILLS HONOURED AT 2024 SAIW AWARDS

SAIW Awards highlight essential contributions to South Africa’s welding and non-destructive testing industries

Johannesburg, 11 November 2024 – The Southern African Institute of Welding (SAIW) hosted its 2024 Awards Gala in Fourways, Johannesburg, celebrating excellence in welding, fabrication, and non-destructive testing (NDT) under the theme, “SAIW - The Backbone of the Welding Industry.” The event underscored SAIW’s role in upholding industry standards, advancing technical training, and promoting innovation across South Africa.

In his opening remarks, SAIW President Joseph Zinyana stated, “Tonight, we celebrate the remarkable skill and dedication within our industry. These awards honour those who not only meet but exceed the standards that make our industry resilient and forward-looking.”

The SAIW’s commitment to accessible quality training was a key highlight of the evening and Zinyana announced a plan to reduce course fees in 2025, aligning with the organisation’s mission to build a skilled, sustainable workforce.


2024 SAIW Award Winners

This year’s awardees represent the highest standards of technical skill, safety, and innovation in welding and NDT:

Best Welder in SAIW 2024 Welder Challenge – Mandla Makhubela
Representing Bazil Technologies, Makhubela shared, “The competition was intense, but my training and focus helped me succeed. This award is a stepping stone for larger projects.”

Best Student in Welding & Fabrication Inspector Level 1 for 2024 – Len Jordaan
Known for his precision and passion, Jordaan reflected, “What began as curiosity became a passion for excellence.”

Best Student in Welding & Fabrication Inspector Level 2 for 2024 - Calvin Carrol
With over 20 years of experience, Carrol remarked, “Continuous learning and dedication are essential to success in this industry. I am grateful to SAIW for this recognition.”


Best Student in Welding Coordinator Award & Phil Santilhano Memorial Award for 2024 - Armand Pierre Rosenthal
Renowned for his innovation in the mining sector, Rosenthal stated, “True success comes from dedication and a commitment to quality.”

SAIW President’s Award for Best NDT Student in 2024 - Sunithi Barends
Recognised for her commitment to safety and expertise in NDT, Barends significantly advanced industry standards.

Best ISO 3834 Welding Coordinator for 2024 – Emily Van Der Schyff
Van Der Schyff stated, “Welding is an art. Each project challenged me to push the boundaries, and I am honoured by this recognition.”

Best IIW Manufacturing Certification Scheme ISO 3834 Company Award for 2024 - Eriger
As a leader in the industrial boiler sector, Eriger received recognition for its safety and innovation. Managing Director Ian Mc Leod commented, “This award reaffirms our commitment to surpassing industry standards.”

SAIW Gold Medal Award for 2024 - Dawie Olivier
Known for his mentorship and commitment to skill development, Olivier said, “Curiosity and perseverance have been my guiding principles. Excellence is built on continuous learning and collaboration.”

Building a Legacy of Excellence

Looking to the future, SAIW Executive Director John Tarboton acknowledged the challenges within South Africa’s welding and manufacturing sectors and praised the dedication of the awardees, stating, “Our mission is to be the backbone of the welding industry. We’re reducing training barriers and strengthening our programs to ensure future generations have the skills they need to succeed.”
